Sad to announce the passing of John (Jonny) Frost just before Christmas after a
prolonged illness.
Known to many in the club from his time as a skilful, fit and combative scrum half in
the 70s, as a motivating coach particularly to younger players and 7’s teams, and as
a convivial, compassionate and loyal friend.
His father, Dr Gerry Frost was sculling champion of Ireland before the war and his
mother Dr Maura Frost (nee Gannon) played Camogie for Ireland. John joined the
Irish in his late teens and with brother Michael, made an impact across a number of
fronts at the club. A member of the ground-breaking and controversial tour to South
Africa in 1977 (back-row, far right in photo below), the first foreign side to play
against a black team, and a regular No 9 in 1 st XV and Geese teams over that period.
After a spell at the BBC in London, John moved to Shropshire where he oversaw the
successful development of a farming and food business and retired to Deal in Kent.
John’s funeral will be on Friday 10 th January at 12 noon in Deal, at the Catholic
Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, 14 Blenheim Road, Deal CT14 7DB (01304
367496).
Our sympathies go to Caroline, Ellie and Will, and to John’s siblings and wider
family. We will miss the energy, the smiles, the jokes and the love.
Well played John – RIP
