Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doris, Rory, Siobhán and Ronan on the passing of Jim at the age of 92. As his son Rory said ‘he had a great innings’

Jim arrived in London from Thurles in county Tipperary in the mid fifties as a qualified chartered accountant. Whilst studying in Ireland he played hurling at county level achieving a county medal for the minor team. He played his rugby mainly as an out half for the Wanderers with occasional call ups to the Geese and once or twice for the 1st XV. He was awarded an Honours tie. He was made a vice president for services to the club.
His other sport was golf. He played at Royal Mid Surrey at Richmond being a regular member of the Club’s inter club matches. He also played for the London Irish Golf Society becoming both Captain & President.
London Irish will always be grateful to Jim and his wife Doris for the time and effort they gave to the club. Their home was opposite the entrance to the club’s ground at The Avenue. Before the days of regular groundsmen, both of them would be seen walking the grounds checking that all was in good order. They are even credited with marking the pitch for weekend games when the groundsman failed to turn up. They acted as weather judge in mid winter and would make a judgement early on a Saturday morning if the ground was unplayable. This saved unnecessary journeys for clubs like Bristol, Leicester and Northampton when the pitch was frozen.
Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
