There is a long, strong, and valued tradition for Clontarf taking part in the festival with some current Irish International representing Clontarf in earlier years.
The club was founded in 1876. Since its foundation the Club Colours have been Blue and Red, probably derived from the colours of the local Boat Club. The official Club title is Clontarf Football Club rather than Clontarf Rugby Football Club. The explanation is simple – the club was formed before the Irish Rugby Football Union was formed and indeed before the Football Association of Ireland was formed and thus is one of a unique few remaining clubs with this entitlement.
The Bull emblem used in the logo derives from the district Clontarf, or in the Irish language, Cluain Tarbh which means Meadow or Field of the Bull. The colours are proudly worn by our U-12's.
We have a very strong underage division within the club catering with over 600 boys and girls from the ages of 6-12 years. Brian O Driscoll first played the game as part of our underage division, following in the tradition of his dad and grandad who both played for Clontarf.
Other Clontarf players to wear the green jersey for Ireland include Cian Healy, Fergus Dunlea, James Downey, JJ Fortune, Paddy Lawlor, Tadhg Furlong, Ian Keatley, Joey Carberry, Mick McGrath.
Women's rugby has also grown in Clontarf with our very own Fiona Coghlan, who captained Ireland women's to a Six Nations Grand Slam recently became the first woman inducted into the IRFU hall of fame.
We have a great group of players, parents and coaches with our U-12 squad and we look forward to meeting many friends over the weekend. No doubt we will see some of the future greats of the game!
