[quote_left]Match Report: London Irish Girls U15 14 v 42 Grasshoppers Girls U15[/quote_left]

A brisk, grey, cold, Saturday morning at Hazelwood saw a great game of Girls Rugby. London Irish Under 15s took on a very good Grasshoppers RFC team.

The girls were primed and ready for battle as the professionals trained on the pitch opposite our 4g during our warm up, Tom Coventry popped over to see what moves the girls had during a particularly aggressive rucking drill at the time and he stated that he had seen some super rucking and tackling.

Captain for the day was Becca who won the toss and elected for Irish to kick off. At 11am it all began. Ball quickly came to Maddie who smashed through two players before we lost the ball in the ruck, caught surprised by some great jackling from Grasshoppers and Irish were on the back foot early. Great early defence work from Kate who helped Maddie and Becca at the base of the ruck formed. A quick ball from the base of the ruck from Grasshoppers nd the ball went quickly along the line to the wing.

First try went to Grasshoppers and they quickly converted it to take a 7-0 lead. It was already shaping up to be a battle as they almost scored from the kick off. Irish didn’t let their heads drop for one second as a quick move from Maddie, smashing through three players with an offload to Becca who punched through their midfield, three players took her down and there to snatch the ball was Scarlett who, with a quick turn of foot, shot through their defence and scored a great try. Caitlin quickly converted and the scores were level after 8 mins.It was tight for the next 5 minutes with some great rucking from both sides.

Some of the Irish Girls had not played a competitive game, some had only 1 & 2 games under their belt but all showed super passion, strength and will to put their bodies on the line for their mates. A break in the back line saw an overlap on our wing and Grasshoppers shot in with a second try and another quick conversion.

Half time came and although Irish had some inexperience in the team, they didn’t lack attitude, commitment and a desire to win.

Second half came and Irish came under a great deal of early pressure at the breakdown, a quick ball along the line saw a great Grasshopper try on the left wing, Elle & Julia almost had her with a tackle but she skipped by and again their kicker was on top form with a super conversion. Another try, almost the same as their last one came as their experience showed and the try was converted again with great accuracy by their 10.

Irish heads refused to drop and we were quickly back in it after a super run by Tandia, some fabulous rucking by over by Ellie, over to Julia and a final ball from Scarlett to Becca who crash balled through their defences and scored a cracking try. Was it too late for Irish to get back into it? Try was quickly converted by Caitlin and the game was back on.

Such was the quality of our opposition that they scored two super tries on each wing with some great passing along the line to take us to the end of the game.

Special mentions must go to Sophie who after only two training sessions played her first game and showed great courage by getting really involved.
